A dead rat or mouse inside a wall, an attic or under a floor makes itself known by smell. In Killeen's heat, that smell shows up fast and gets strong. It usually fades on its own over a few weeks, but few people want to wait that long, and the flies that follow are their own problem.

Here is what removal involves, why the source can be hard to find, and how to keep it from happening again.

What a thorough removal includes

  • Tracking the smell to its source, often by following flies, stains and the strongest point of the odor
  • Access through the attic, crawl space, a vent or, if there is no other way, a small cut in drywall that can be patched
  • Removing the carcass, nesting material and soaked insulation in plastic bags, double-bagged the way the CDC describes
  • Cleaning and disinfecting the spot, and an odor treatment if needed
  • A look for how the animal got in, and whether bait in the area caused it

How removal works, step by step

  • Narrow down the area. The smell is usually strongest in one room or one stretch of wall.
  • Check the easy spots first: the attic above the room, under the house if it is pier-and-beam, the garage wall, behind appliances and inside HVAC returns.
  • Open access if needed. A drywall cut is a last resort and should be small.
  • Remove and double-bag the carcass with gloves on. Spray the area with disinfectant and let it soak before wiping.
  • Treat the odor and close the access.
  • Find out why it happened. A dead rodent in a wall often means others are still alive.

Why dead rodents are a bigger nuisance in Killeen

Heat speeds everything up. With summer highs in the mid-90s and attic temperatures well above that, decomposition happens quickly and the smell carries through ductwork into the rest of the house. A dead rat in an attic above a return vent can make the whole house smell.

Bait is the other common cause. When rodenticide is placed inside a home or attic, poisoned rodents often die in walls, attics or under floors instead of outside. If you have had bait put out recently and now smell something, tell the provider so they know where to look. It is one reason many technicians prefer trapping inside the house.

Pier-and-beam houses in older parts of Killeen add another hiding place. A rat that dies under the floor can be hard to reach without crawling under the house, and the provider needs to know whether there is an access hatch.

Can you remove it yourself?

If you can reach it, yes. Follow the CDC steps: wear rubber or plastic gloves, spray the dead rodent and the area around it with disinfectant or a bleach solution (1.5 cups of bleach per gallon of water) and let it soak for 5 minutes. Place the rodent in a plastic bag, seal it, put that bag in a second bag, and throw it in a covered trash can. Then wash your gloved hands, take off the gloves and wash your hands again.

If the smell is inside a wall or a part of the attic you cannot reach safely, that is when a provider earns their fee. Our article on dead rodent smell covers how long it lasts and how to narrow down the source.

Dead rodent removal questions

How long does a dead rat smell last?
Usually a few weeks, depending on the size of the animal and the heat. In a hot Killeen attic in summer, the worst of it often passes faster but is stronger while it lasts.
How much does dead rodent removal cost?
Fixr lists dead rat removal at about $150 to $250 nationally. Drywall access, odor treatment and cleanup of soaked insulation add to that.
Will the provider cut into my wall?
Only if there is no other way. Ask them to explain the access plan first. Most dead rodents can be reached from the attic, crawl space, a vent or the garage.
Do I need to throw out insulation the rodent was lying in?
The soaked section should come out. A whole-attic insulation replacement is only needed when contamination is widespread. See attic rodent cleanup.
Why are there flies in one room?
Flies gathering at a window or a light in one room are a common sign of a dead rodent nearby. Look in the wall, attic or floor near that spot.
