Downtown is the oldest part of Killeen. The Santa Fe railroad opened its station here in May 1882 and named the town for Frank P. Killeen, a company official. The street grid laid out around the tracks is still the heart of downtown, and the Killeen Downtown Historic District, roughly bounded by Avenue A, Santa Fe Plaza and North 4th and North 8th streets, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.

Old buildings, shared walls and alleys make downtown a different rodent problem from the suburbs.

What draws rats downtown

Most downtown buildings are older commercial blocks that share side walls. Rats and mice travel through those walls, through shared ceiling space and along the alleys behind the storefronts. Restaurants, bars and food businesses put out grease and food waste, and dumpsters in the alleys give rats a steady meal. Upper floors that sit empty or serve as storage give them a quiet place to nest.

Older masonry has its own gaps. Mortar wears away, old utility openings get abandoned and never patched, and wood trim at the base of storefronts rots. Norway rats work along foundations and into basements and crawl spaces where they exist.

Historic buildings

The Santa Fe built a second depot here in 1913, and the city later bought and restored it. Owners of older downtown buildings should ask for sealing methods that suit masonry: mortar or cement patches, metal flashing and hardware cloth, rather than foam that rats chew through.

What a good downtown job looks like

One storefront treating alone rarely holds when the neighbors have rats. The better approach is a plan for the building or the block: exterior stations along the alley, traps inside, and sealing at the back doors, utility penetrations and the base of the walls. Owners of older buildings should ask for a written list of gaps and who is responsible for each one, since some will sit in shared walls.

Restaurants downtown are inspected by the Bell County Public Health District. The restaurant rodent control page covers what inspectors look for.

Downtown Killeen rodent questions

Who handles rats in a downtown alley?
Trash and debris on private property are a code enforcement matter. Killeen Code Enforcement handles litter and trash complaints and takes reports through the city's Report a Concern system. See our reporting guide.
Can rats move between storefronts?
Yes. Shared walls and ceiling space let them move from one business to the next. A plan that covers neighboring spaces works better than treating one unit.
Do upstairs apartments downtown need their own treatment?
Often they need to be part of the same plan, since mice and rats move between floors through the same wall cavities and plumbing chases.
