Rodent Control in North Killeen
Mid-century homes and duplexes near the post boundary, many on pier-and-beam foundations, and a lot of rentals.
Rodent help in North Killeen (254) 276-0111Much of north Killeen's housing dates from the decades after Camp Hood became a permanent post. Killeen went from about 1,300 people in 1949 to more than 7,000 in 1950, and much of the housing from that boom is here. Neighborhood data puts a large share of the homes in the 1940 to 1969 range, with a mix of small single-family houses, duplexes and apartment complexes, and most of it renter occupied.
Why older homes here get mice
Many mid-century houses in north Killeen sit on pier-and-beam foundations. The skirting around the crawl space loosens over time, foundation vents lose their screens, and plumbing runs up through the floor in several places. Mice walk in under the house and come up through the gaps around pipes under the kitchen and bathroom sinks. Norway rats burrow beside the piers.
Siding and trim on older houses also get patched over the years. A gap behind a downspout, an old dryer vent hole or a missing piece of soffit is enough. Many of these homes have had several owners and many tenants, and repairs were not always done with rodents in mind.
Close to the post
Fort Hood borders Killeen to the north, so homes on the north side sit near the open land of the post.
Rentals and turnover
With so many rentals, units change hands often, and an empty house between tenants is an easy place for mice to settle. If you are a tenant, report rodents to your landlord in writing and keep a copy. The tenant and landlord guide explains the Texas notice rules. If you own the duplex or fourplex, plan for the whole building; mice move between units through shared walls and attics. See rental and apartment rodent control.
Ask the technician to check under the house, not just the kitchen and attic. In a pier-and-beam home, that is where most of the work is.
North Killeen rodent questions
- Should the crawl space be sealed?
- The skirting and foundation vents should be rodent-tight, using hardware cloth or metal vent covers that still allow airflow. Ask the provider to check every vent.
- Who pays for rodent control in a north Killeen rental?
- It depends on the lease and the cause. Texas law requires landlords to repair conditions that materially affect health or safety once properly notified. Read your lease and our tenant guide.
- Are rats common near the post boundary?
- Homes on the edge of open land, including training land, often see more rodent pressure from outside. Sealing the house matters more there.
