Rodent help in Chaparral Road and Heritage Oaks (254) 276-0111

Chaparral Road was a two-lane road on the far south edge of Killeen for a long time. Chaparral High School opened beside it in 2022, a middle school was planned nearby, and the city has been planning to widen the road to five lanes with bike lanes, with a realignment near the high school on the east and near Stillhouse Lake Road on the west. Heritage Oaks, a subdivision near Rosewood Drive and Chaparral, is still adding phases, and the city's Heritage Oaks Trail runs about 3.8 miles.

Rodents on the changing edge

Land around Chaparral Road was ranch and pasture until recently. Fields like that support field mice, cotton rats and other small rodents. Each new phase of grading displaces them, and the homes that border the cleared land see mice in garages, walls and storage first. The Texas A&M AgriLife rodent course lists cotton rats and deer mice among the species that matter in Texas, and the CDC links the deer mouse to hantavirus, so cleanup in garages and sheds deserves some care.

New homes here are slab-on-grade with attached garages. Ask the builder about any gaps covered under warranty before paying for repairs.

Road work along the ditches

The widening has been a long time coming. The project was first approved in 2004 but went unfunded, and Bell County commissioners later presented the Killeen council with a $3 million check toward it. When construction moves along a rural road like this one, crews dig up the ditches and brush that line it, which is where rats and field mice live. Homes along the right-of-way often see more activity during the work. Check the foundation line and garage door seal before the crews reach your stretch.

What to ask for

An exterior walk-around comes first: garage door seals, weep holes, utility entries and the roofline. Ask for trapping in the garage and kitchen, and a recheck after a few weeks. If the lot behind you is about to be graded, a monitoring plan can catch the next wave early. See mouse control for what a full job includes.

Chaparral Road and Heritage Oaks rodent questions

Why are there mice in a brand-new house?
Nearby grading displaces field rodents, and new homes have small gaps that have not been sealed. Both are common in the first year or two.
Can a cotton rat get into my house?
Cotton rats mostly live in fields and grass, but they can enter garages and sheds near open land. Treat them like any rat: trap, seal and clean carefully.
Should I clean garage droppings myself?
For a small area, follow the CDC steps: air it out, wear gloves, spray with disinfectant and wipe up. For heavy contamination, hire it out.
