Florence is a small city in northwestern Williamson County, about 13 miles north of Georgetown and south of Killeen along State Highway 195. The 2020 census counted 1,171 residents. Settlers arrived in the early 1850s, and by 1857 the town had a post office under the Florence name. Many properties are on large lots with barns, sheds and pasture around them.

Older homes and outbuildings

Older houses in town that sit on pier-and-beam foundations have skirting and vents that can let mice in from below. Out of town, barns, feed rooms and equipment sheds are where rats and mice settle first. Hay, grain and pet food stored in outbuildings draw them, and they move into the house when weather turns cold or wet.

New homes built on former pasture anywhere in the area tend to see mice in the first year or two, while the land around them settles.

A railroad town in ranch country

Florence was served by the Bartlett-Florence Railway, which connected with the Missouri-Kansas-Texas line in Bartlett. Around town, ranch and farm properties with hay barns and feed storage are where rodent problems usually start. Keep feed in metal bins, store hay off the ground where you can, and set traps along the inside walls of barns and sheds rather than spreading loose bait where livestock, dogs and barn cats can reach it. Barn cats help, but they rarely clear an established population on their own.

What helps most

Close the gaps on the house first: crawl space skirting and vents, plumbing entries under sinks, and the garage door. Then deal with the outbuildings: feed in metal bins, nothing stacked against walls, and traps along the walls inside. If you find droppings in a closed shed, air it out and wet them with disinfectant before wiping them up. See mouse control and rodent exclusion.

Florence rodent questions

Do providers serve Florence?
Calls from Florence go to local providers who work the Killeen area and points south. Give your address so they can confirm.
Why do mice come in from the barn?
Barns and sheds hold food and shelter. When cold or wet weather arrives, mice move toward the warmer house nearby.
Should I seal my crawl space completely?
Vents need to stay open for airflow, but they should be covered with metal mesh or rodent-proof vent covers. Skirting should be tight to the ground.
